Vicente Benavente Calla (1926-2009), teacher at primary school and journalist, considered the foremost poet of Juliaca. He achieve local fame, published his first poems when he was twenty-eight years old.
During his lifetime, Benavente wrote six books of poems, Julia (1954), Vientos de Amor (1962), Cinco poemas para mañana (1965), Mural de latidos (1974), Cantos encendidos (1976) and Raíces del viento (1997), attracted much attention his identified himself with Juliaca city.
All his life, Benavente dedicated himself to the promotion any cultural societies. He is founder in the Asociación Cultural Xullaca, Centro Federado de Periodistas, Agrupación de Tokoros y Pinkillos Los Machuaychas and Asociación de Instituciones Pandilleras de San Román. Aside from organize the famous II Juegos Sur Peruanos de Poesía (1967), he is an announcer of the program Altura Poética in Radio Juliaca (1959-1963).
